What is high cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that resides in our
bloodstream. A certain amount of cholesterol is essential to
maintain good health. There are two types of cholesterol – Good
Cholesterol and Bad cholesterol.
The two types of cholesterol:
1. HDL cholesterol otherwise
known as Good cholesterol or High Density
Lipoprotein.
HDL or Good Cholesterol collects some of the cholesterol left
behind in your arteries and brings it to the liver where it is
processed and expelled from the body. Regular exercise can
increase your HDL cholesterol and help keep you
healthy.
2. LDL cholesterol otherwise known as Bad cholesterol or Low
Density Lipoprotein.
LDL cholesterol or Bad Cholesterol travels from the liver to
the various parts of the body. It sticks to the walls of the
arteries and causes them to narrow. This narrowing of the
arteries in turn causes restricts blood flow and is one of the
main causes of heart attack and stroke.
There are a number of possible causes of high cholesterol
LDL:

The consumption of high saturated fats as found in many fast
food takeaways, burgers, fries, chips and dairy
products.
2.
It can be inherited and family history should be
investigated.
3.
Liver or kidney diseases, diabetes, under active thyroid.
The only true way to have your cholesterol checked is to have a
blood test carried out. This will show your levels of HDL and
LDL. If your results show an abnormal cholesterol level of
either HDL or LDL you should discuss this with your doctor.
Your doctor will ask you about your diet and your family
history. Your doctor will also check to see if you have any
other underlying condition that may be the cause of the
abnormal cholesterol levels.
